The fragment containing promoter-operator and structural parts of a gene for uridine phosphorylase from Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 has been cloned. A cross-heterological expression of the udp genes from Sh. oneidensis MR-1 and Escherichia coli under the control of the authentic regulatory regions was shown. The UDP protein was accumulated in the active form in the cytoplasmic fraction. The recombinant UDP protein from Sh. oneidensis MR-1 obtained by the heterological expression was isolated and characterized. The activity of the promoter of the E. coli udp gene upon the heterological expression in Sh. oneidensis MR-1 cells under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions was observed.

Key words:  E. coli,  heterological expression,  Shewanella oneidensis,  uridine phosphorylase (UDP).
