A new technique for the ethanol production, obtaining of synthesis gas from lignocellulose by fermentation with special acidogenic bacteria, is reviewed. The technique has a few basic advantages over the routine methods for saccharide fermentation — universal character and high alcohol yield. In 2012—2013, industrial-scale plants using this technique are to be put in operation in USA and China.
Key words: acidogenic bacteria, biofilms, hole fibers, membrane bioreactors, synthesis gas.
