Desalination of L-Valine Fermentation Broth by Electrodialysis through Ion-Exchange Membranes

A process of desalination by the electromembrane method of a permeate of L-valine culture liquid (CL) has been studied (the fermentation was carried out without the addition of chalk). The desalination was performed using a five-chamber electrodialyzer. Changes of dry matters (DM), pH, electroconductivity of the solution, as well as voltage in the circuit during the process of L-valine permeate desalination depending on time were determined at the ultimate current density. Kinetic migration curves for valine and concomitant amino acids through MK-40 cation-exchanging membrane during the desalination were plotted. The investigations showed that electrodialysis enabled to purify the L-valine permeate from mineral ions (the degree of desalination of 98,5%) and from basic and acidic amino acids with minimal losses of the target product (3,9%). The specific energy consumption for the transportation of ions through membranes during the  permeate desalination was 0,48 A/h/kg and the current efficiency was 85%. It was thus shown that a technologically accessible electromembrane method for desalination of culture liquids of amino acids and probably of other biologically active compounds can be developed.
