The general oxidizing capacity of active sludge microorganisms occurring in a bioreactor in the form of attached flora (biofilm) has been determined. We used the method of dehydrogenase activity (DHA) determination based on the application of methylene blue as an indicator. A non-linear character of kinetic curves of a substrate (glucose) biological oxidation was observed; putatively, this is a result of the peculiarities of the accumulation of respiratory mediators in the biomass. The reserves of those mediators of redox reactions was assessed, and the data on the biofilm DHA activity (~ 150 nmole/min/mg of dry biomass) are represented. This value testifies to a high oxidation potential of the active sludge biofilm in bioreactors.
Key words: active sludge, biofilm, biological treatment, dehydrogenase activity, microorganisms.
