A scaled-up cultivation from flasks to semi-industrial bioreactors (up to 630 l) of the Panax japonicus suspension cell culture under a semi-continuous regime has been performed. The cell population growth and biosynthetic characteristics during the scaling-up process were investigated. It was shown that the cultivation in bioreactors had less effect on the growth than on biosynthetic characteristics (ginsenoside formation). The decrease in the total content of major gingenosides in the cell biomass and also changes in the ratio of individual compounds were observed as a result of going to the bioreactor cultivation. The under-research strain is characterized by a wide variation of ginsenoside content under either conventional culturing in flasks or growing in a bioreactor. The regular chemical analysis showed, thad the total content of  7 major ginsenosides (Rf, Rb1, Rc, Rb2, Rd, Rg1 and Re) in cell biomass can vary from 0.5% to 3.0 % of dry cell biomass.
