An anaerobic treatment of individual organic wastes (sewage sludge, organic fraction of municipal solid waste, fat, overdue preserved foods, food waste, filter-press dewatered sewage sludge) and their mixtures has been performed in batch reactors at 55°C for 15 days. The highest amounts of biogas were observed during the fermentation of organic fraction of solid waste mixed with sewage sludge. In the digested mixtures with high biogas emission, the maximum reduction of total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (Ntot) was observed. It was established that all the waste samples had toxic effects on Paramecium caudatum Ehrenberg, Daphnia magna Straus and Raphanus sativus L. The fermentation of individual wastes during 15 days mainly provided an increase, and that of the wastes mixtures, in opposite, a reduction of their toxicity. Analysis of the data set on the biogas yield, changing of TOC and Ntot contents and toxicity permits to recommend the anaerobic method for the treatment of the studied wastes as a mixture with the organic fraction of municipal solid waste.
