A protein-containing material, human hair, has been subjected to acidic or alkaline hydrolysis in order to obtain a mixture of amino acids. The aminoacid composition of the obtained hydrolysates was determined, and it was shown that the hydrolysis by hydrochloric acid proved to be most technologically effective. For the first time, both mixture of amino acids and natural melanin were obtained from the same raw material. A process of the melanin purification and the characteristics of the compound were investigated, and a method for its transformation into water-soluble form was developed. An effective procedure based on electrodialysis for the decrease in the mineral content of the acidic hydrolysate with the simultaneous separation of amino acids according to their basicity was suggested. It was shown that the use of the suggested combine method permits to obtain neutral, acidic and alkaline amino acids, and also natural water-soluble melanin from the protein-containing material, compounds that can be used in agriculture and (after additional purification) in medicine, with a low energy and reagents expenses and with the formation of small amounts of wastes. The contents of the amino acids in the obtained mixtures and melanin in the individual preparation were equal to 98% and 96%, respectively.
